Let's talk about:
Becoming a Certified Diver
How to Become a PADI Certified Diver There is a moment, a metre or so under the surface, when you take your first slow breath from a regulator and your body finally believes it. You are breathing underwater. The reef carries on around you as though you belong there. Most people come up from that first breath grinning around the mouthpiece, already hooked. Here is the reassuring part. Going from “I have never dived” to “I am a certified diver” follows a clear, well-worn path. The PADI Open Water course is the most recognised entry-level certification in the world, it works the same way everywhere, and once you have it the card never expires. It opens up dive sites across the planet. Here is exactly how it works.
Phase 1: The theory First you learn how diving actually works: pressure, buoyancy, your equipment, and how to plan a safe dive. The knowledge is split into five short modules. Each one ends with a quiz, and there is a final exam at the end to tie it all together. You have two ways to get through it. The easy one is PADI eLearning: study online, at your own pace, on the sofa at home before your trip. The other is the classic route, a printed PADI manual and classroom sessions at a local dive shop. Most travellers choose eLearning and finish the theory before they fly, so the holiday itself is spent in the water rather than in a classroom.
Phase 2: The pool Next you get wet somewhere calm and shallow, a swimming pool or in the ocean in calm, protected conditions. With an instructor right beside you, you practise the skills every diver relies on: assembling your gear, clearing your mask, finding neutral buoyancy, and running through the safety drills until they feel automatic. Nobody pushes you toward the ocean. Here's something we believe strongly... We don't believe in rushing people through a checklist. Some dive centres can feel like production lines, moving students from one exercise to the next simply to tick the boxes. That's never been our style. At ABWonderdive, our groups stay small because we'd rather create confident divers than simply certified ones. If you need to repeat a skill three times, we repeat it three times. If you need ten goes before it clicks, that's absolutely fine too. Nobody learns at exactly the same speed, and confidence cannot be rushed. Our goal isn't just for you to pass the course. Our goal is for you to finish smiling, relaxed, and genuinely excited to jump back in the water again. Because people who love diving become divers for life. And every confident diver becomes another ambassador for protecting our oceans.
Phase 3: The open water Now the real thing. You complete four open-water dives with your instructor, putting the pool skills to work on an actual reef. · Dives 1 and 2 go to a maximum of 12 metres (40 feet). These are for settling in and getting comfortable. · Dives 3 and 4 go to a maximum of 18 metres (60 feet), the standard depth limit for a certified Open Water Diver. When you surface from the fourth dive, your instructor processes your certification. That is it, you’ve done it. You are a diver. Congratulations—you've just joined one of the most amazing communities on Earth. Do it on your holiday in Bali Of course, you could learn to dive in a cold quarry wearing enough neoprene to survive the Arctic. Or... You could learn in warm tropical water, surrounded by colourful coral reefs and curious reef fish. Our stretch of the north-east coast sits right on the warm, clear Bali Sea, and the house reef is a short swim from the beach, so your training dives happen over real coral instead of a green lake. The groups are small and the teaching is personal; we have run dive resorts for decades, and watching someone take their first breaths underwater never gets old. It's a pretty easy choice. But what really makes the difference isn't the water. It's the people.
And Then the Adventure Really Begins... The best thing about earning your certification? It's only the beginning. The world-famous USAT Liberty Wreck, the reefs of Tulamben and countless other dive sites are all right on our doorstep. You don't finish the course and go home. You finish the course and go diving. Learn in the morning. Explore in the afternoon. Swap stories over dinner by the sea that evening. It's not a bad way to spend a holiday.
Start before you fly The simplest plan is the best one. Complete your PADI eLearning at home before your trip. Then come to Bali, enjoy your confined water sessions, complete your four open-water dives, and spend the rest of your holiday diving as a newly certified diver. Simple. We'll take care of the rest.
